Everything You Should Know about Lingual Braces and How They Can Benefit You

If you are thinking about braces, whether it’s for you or your child, you do have plenty of options nowadays. You may be surprised by the sheer number of options available to you, whether it’s traditional metal braces, clear braces, lingual braces, self-ligating braces, or Invisalign. But no one can deny that one of the most popular options nowadays is lingual braces. Lingual braces are a great choice if you don’t want braces to be easily seen or noticed, and they’re very effective as well. Are you wondering what lingual braces are and how they can benefit you? Here’s everything you should know about lingual braces and why they’re much more popular today.

What are they?

Simply put, lingual braces are braces which an orthodontist will place behind your teeth rather than in front of them. The orthodontist places the braces by the palate and the tongue instead of attached to the teeth’s front surface, and they offer a better alternative to standard braces, cosmetically speaking. In other words, if you don’t want the braces to show and affect the way you or your kid looks, then you can seriously consider lingual braces.

The process of having lingual braces

The process of having lingual braces is pretty straightforward. The orthodontist takes a teeth impression, and this impression is sent to a laboratory which will then use it to produce brackets which are customized. The process usually takes around a month and a half, and when it’s complete, the orthodontist can then cement or attach the braces to the back of the teeth.

Just like standard metal braces, lingual braces work by putting gentle but steady and continual pressure or force on your teeth so that they can slowly move into the right position. Treatment for lingual braces can take between 18 to 36 months, based on the teeth’s condition (the person’s bite or the overcrowding of the teeth). Be aware that not all the orthodontists you may know offer the installation of lingual braces as it requires special technical experience and training, although an orthodontist from Woodbridge VA’s American Braces Smile Center can certainly offer it to those who are interested.

Other essential facts you should know

Lingual braces are popular because they are worth your investment, although you should bear in mind that they do have some requirements. For example, since lingual braces are customized, they can cost more than metal braces, and the treatment can be more intensive.

There is also a specific way of caring for lingual braces, and of course, good oral hygiene is essential. For proper hygiene when wearing lingual braces, the wearer should brush their teeth two times every day for a minimum of two minutes every time. The best brush for such braces is a toothbrush with round bristles which is also soft. You or the wearer should also make it a point to floss every day and make use of a device for oral irrigation to flush food residue or debris from around the teeth and brackets.
